PEAR PARK, Colo. (KREX) — On the afternoon of Jan. 28, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) deputies located a wanted person driving an RV in the area of North Ave. and 29 Road. The RV stopped in the parking lot of a business on 29 Road near D 1/4 Road. When deputies approached the vehicle, the driver refused to come out.

The driver, identified as 60-year-old Leo Medina, had an active warrant for his arrest from the MCSO for charges of Robbery (F4), False Imprisonment (M2), Assault in the Third Degree (M1), and Theft $50-$300 (M3).

Medina, the sole occupant of the RV, made threats of starting a fire. Deputies evacuated the nearby business and closed 29 Road from D to D1/2 Roads as a precaution.

Deputies trained in crisis intervention and negotiation were able to convince Medina to surrender as the RV caught fire.

The suspect was transported to the hospital with minor burns. No other injuries were reported.

Medina was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on his active warrant. Charges from today’s incident are pending further investigation.

Mesa County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team and the Grand Junction Police Department assisted with the situation.
