Delta, CO - More than 100 people came together in Confluence Park in Delta on Saturday to give each other support and to talk about the horrific details they are learning about loved ones who were handled by the Sunset Mesa Funeral Directors funeral home in Montrose.
Families are now just getting those details from the FBI, as the federal agency continues its investigation into Sunset Mesa.
The funeral home, and its owner Megan Hess, are being investigated for allegations that bodies and body parts were sold without families' permission, and many were given fake bags of cremains.
Hess also legally operated a body broker business out of the funeral home. The state shut down the home in March, and the Colorado Legislature has since passed a law forbidding people to operate both a funeral home and a body broker business.
At the Saturday rally, people revealed that the FBI has said bodies and body parts had been shipped by Hess to companies in Michigan, China and Saudi Arabia.
One woman described how her husband's body had been dismembered and shipped to a company in Detroit.
Another talked about a family member who was believed to have been cremated as the family had desired, but then found out from the FBI that her body had been embalmed and shipped to Michigan.
Dozens of people got up before the gathering with similar stories.
The event organizer, Debra Schum, told KREX 5 News that the FBI says they have retrieved 50 to 60 full bodies, and are using those to build their case.
