Magical Music Teacher Wins Golden Apple Award!

Celebrating August's Golden Apple Award Winner

GRAND JUNCTION, CO - With school back in session, KREX 5 News is celebrating a special band teacher this month, as part of our Golden Apple Awards. The band director at Bookcliff Middle School, Robin Mitchum, won a basket of goodies from Homestyle Bakery and a massage from Acuity Massage.

Mitchum has been teaching at the school for around three decades, and he absolutely loves teaching the students how to read music and blossom into musicians. "He's an institution here at Bookcliff, so if we need to know something that did happen, or is about to happen, or make some connections, connect the dots between the past and the present and our future, Robin Mitchum's definitely a part of that conversation," said Jim Butterfield, the principal at Bookcliff Middle School.

Mitchum said his lessons on music go beyond the classroom and cross into the student's lives. "They work together, they find how they can contribute to the band, and that goes into what they, when they grow up, they find out what contribution they can make in life, and make a better world," said Mitchum.
