GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Mesa County Sheriff's Deputies have arrested Shaun Obyrne, 31, of Grand Junction, in connection to the death of his 2-month-old son.
Obyrne is facing charges of Child Abuse Resulting in Death and Child Abuse causing Serious Bodily Injury.
Deputies said his arrest stems from an incident on August 27, 2018, when they responded to a home on the 100 block of 29 ¾ road for a report of an unconscious 2-month-old boy who was not breathing.
The baby was taken to St. Mary's Hospital and was later transferred to Children’s Hospital Colorado where he died of his injuries two days later.
At the time of his death, the infant had at least 17 broken ribs.
Medical professionals who reviewed the baby’s injuries said they were not the result of an accident.
Their review concluded the baby had likely faced similar injuries on three separate occasions between June and August of 2018.
The Mesa County Coroner’s office has ruled the baby's death of a homicide and said he died from blunt force chest injuries
As a result of his death, the Coroner's Office will be re-reviewing the death of a 2-year-old child who died while in Obyrne’s care back in May of 2018.
That 2-year-old's death had originally been ruled as natural.
Both cases are still under investigation.
