GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — A joint partnership between School District 51, the District Attorney’s office and Colorado Mesa University to help tackle truancy in local schools just got a big boost.

The Ferris family just donated $100,000 to the Lighthouse Project.

The program launched in January on CMU’s campus, now District 51 students facing suspension, expulsion, or a truancy case are referred to the project, which aims to keep youth out of the justice system and in school.

Once on CMU’s campus, they are paired with a college student working to achieve a degree in social work who will serve as a role model and mentor.

The hope is the mentor will get the student back on the straight and narrow.
