MESA COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) — A dozen-year-old Mesa County cold case may have just found a spark.
Mesa County Coroner officials have determined the identity of a skull found in 2011 by Colorado Mesa University students near Divide Road in the Uncompahgre Wilderness. DNA testing of a relative at Othram laboratories confirmed the remains belong to then-50-year-old Michael John Alonzi.
Law enforcement still does not know how he died, but the coroner’s office says police records show Alonzi as a transient in the area between the late 90s and early 2000s.
The Mesa County Coroner’s office asks anyone with information that may help solve this case to contact local law enforcement.
