Mesa, Garfield Counties Under Stage 1 Fire Restriction Friday

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo - At the stroke of midnight, stage one fire restrictions will be in place for Garfield and Mesa counties on all lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

As opposed to county fire restrictions, these only apply to BLM lands in the form of restricting undeveloped campfires, the use of charcoal, explosive materials, torches, and smoking within a 3-foot diameter of combustible materials.

Due to a dry winter producing low moisture, fire managers at the BLM based their decisions about Friday's fire restrictions on low specific moisture measurements in vegetation and other risk factors.

"At least out of the Grand Junction Field Office has now decided, based on our indices, to go into Stage 1 Fire Restrictions as of Friday morning", says Jeremy Spetter the Public Information Officer for the UCR Interagency Fire Unit.

The stage one fire restriction will remain in effect until further notice from the BLM.
