Museum of the West turns 50

Local News

One of the largest museums between Denver and Salk Lake City celebrated its 50th birthday Sunday.

In 1966, the Museum of the West first opened its doors to the people of Grand Junction…..
Since then, the museum has become one of 13  accredited museums in Colorado and part of just the one percent of museums across the country to renew its accreditation.
An economic study from c-m-u estimates that the museum generates $16 million each year into the economy.
But the museum believes that the community helps them just as much.

It’s the largest multi-disciplinary museum in between Denver and Salt Lake City. It’s more than just regional history, it’s education, it’s paleontology, it’s actually going out and discovering our heritage. C’mon down and discover.” said the museum’s director, Peter Booth said.

All three of the museums will be opening their summer attractions later this month.
