FRUITA, Colo.- (UPDATE): The Mesa County Coroner’s Office has completed its examination regarding the death of David Martin, a 28-year-old male resident of Fruita, Colorado. Mr. Martin was the male involved in the officer-involved shooting that occurred the night of July 17, 2020. The
cause of death is multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death is homicide. Toxicology is pending at this time. Since this is still an active investigation, we will not be
releasing any further information at this time.
(ORIGINAL): A suspect has died after an officer involved shooting in Fruita.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Friday night, officers with the Fruita Police Department and Mesa County Sheriff’s office were dispatched to the 1100 block of E. Carolina Avenue on reports of a felony menacing.
The Grand Junction Police Department, which is assisting in the investigation in this incident, reports a woman called 911, stating her boyfriend had threatened her with a handgun.
After law enforcement arrived and the suspect didn’t cooperate, he was shot by responding officers, and ultimately pronounced dead on scene.
The officers involved in the shooting are being placed on administrative leave as this incident continues to be investigated.
The shooting will be investigated by 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
