Orchard Avenue Elementary Ribbon Cutting

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - A ribbon cutting ceremony at Orchard Mesa Elementary School opened a new open-space area for students.

The school recently got a brand new playground structure called "The Dome".

The asphalt play area outside was refurbished.

The playground also received new wood chips and drainage.

New fitness stations were added around the running track.

The learning garden has edible plants to help kids learn about where their food comes from.

The garden also received a new irrigation system.

A block wall was added for parents or grandparents to sit on and watch their kids play along with picnic tables.

"What is the most meaningful in a new playground, it was that all the kids and the families, including community, had a voice in what happens in our school area."

Great Outdoors Colorado gave a $110,000 grant for the project.

District funds and fundraising added about 40,000 dollars.

The PTA added about 20,000 dollars.

When all was said and done, nearly 168,000 dollars was spent on this project.
