GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — In a June article, Kiplinger voted Grand Junction as the 2nd best place to retire in America, but many on a fixed income have a different retirement experience in Grand Junction.

“There really are opportunities for people to take advantage of if they are so qualified and in need,” said John Rodwick, a member of AARP and retiree in Mesa County.

John and his wife moved to Fruita because of the beautiful scenery, national park, outdoor activities, and CMU.

But not everyone has the luxury of a healthy retirement fund, many seniors are living on a fixed income or still have to work minimum wage jobs well into their golden years.

Food Bank of the Rockies is one of several food banks in the Mesa County area. “We work with local food pantries and other partners to ensure that every single person has food,” said Sue Ellen Rodwick, Western Slope Director for Food Bank of the Rockies, “that especially includes our older adults.”

FBoR has a special food package for seniors called the EverGreen Box. The EverGreen Box is 35 lbs. of shelf-stable food that will save.

Sue Ellen Rodwick also said they will help provide fresh produce to everyone who needs it—not just seniors.

Marillac Health is a community health center that is a great resource for seniors.

“We can provide [seniors] medical care, we can provide their dental care and their behavioral health care if they need that,” said Kristy Schmidt, a chief development officer at Marillac Health.

They can help patients even beyond simply health care. Marillac Health has case managers that can help with transportation to and from facilities, housing, and food barriers.

One of Marillac Health’s local partners is Hope West.

Hope West has a new program called the Pace Program which helps seniors stay in their homes.

“The purpose of the PACE Program is to help individuals with wrap, around, complete and coordinated health care and social care in order for them to stay at home and age at home,” said Mandy DeCino, a senior director for the PACE Program.
