Since the early 90s, eleven 5th graders, from the eleven elementary schools in the city, were given the opportunity to shop for the holidays with local law enforcement officers at the Shop With a Cop event at the Mesa Mall.
Students brought their lists of gifts for loved ones; however, the officers had to remind them to purchase something for themselves. Local law enforcement also gave the life lesson of budgeting their money so it would last for the whole shopping spree. Not only did these students receive some wisdom from the officers, they also created positive memories that will last through the years.
All of the money spent came from various donations in the community and within the Mesa Mall. Heidi Davidson with the Grand Junction Police Department explained, “this program would fall apart without the incredible generosity of the retailers and organizations that donate and make this possible.”
Eleven more students will get this same opportunity on December 6th, at the Rimrock Walmart for their turn to purchase holiday gifts for loved ones.
