South Fork Fire Update

MONTROSE COUNTY, Colo. — South Fork Fire is NW of Nucla, CO & N of Hwy 141 on Horse Mesa. This fire was detected late afternoon on June 7.

Cause: Lightning
Current Size: 14 acres
No structures threatened
Remote area with difficult access
Jurisdiction: BLM, not threating private
Fuel Type: Pinyon & Juniper
Fire Behavior: Creeping with interior single tree torching
Fire Resources: BLM & USFS engines and Colorado DFPC Helicopter available

Full Suppression Strategy – With forecasted Red Flag conditions, remote location
and out of concern for firefighter’s safety, fire managers are looking at indirect
natural barrier features and 2018 Bull Draw Burn Scar to assist in containing the
fire. Expect to see an increase in smoke and fire behavior as portions of the fire
move to identified control features.

BLM is in coordination with Montrose County and Colorado Division of Fire
Prevention and Control (DFPC) fire managers.
