The Benefits of Rescuing a Shelter Pet

Local News

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to adopting a shelter pet. These ideas leave many families thinking that work to train the animal, will outweigh the benefit of having a new companion.

KREX 5 is happy to share that our Pet of the Week segment helped get one of those pets into a loving home.

Looking at Reginold and his owner Shiela, you would think that they’ve known eachother their whole lives.

“I think we’re great friends. I really appreciate his energy,” said Shiela.

However, it was just a few short months ago when Reggie and Shiela were introduced to one another.

“Taking a dog from the shelter brings it’s own challenges but it’s also very rewarding,” Shiela said.

A challenge Shiela said was worth the risk

“I wanted to make sure that he’s be successful in my home also,” said Shiela.

With the help of dog trainer Erika Hall, she was able to make that happen.

“He’ll be the third dog of ours through her program,” Shiela said.

“He’s one of the smartest dogs I’ve ever met. Once you set up a training session or scenario he immediately understood what you wanted,” said Erika Hall, Owner at Strutt Your Mutt.

By sharing her success with Reggie, Shiela hopes she can encourage others to consider adopting a pet.

“I think that there’s a lot of good dogs in shelters that deserve good homes. I like to provide that for him and I think he’s a great dog,” she said.
