GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX)–Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters has been asked by Mesa County GOP chair Kevin McCarney–as well as by County Commissioner Cody Davis–to resign; yet she refuses to do so. Peters has cost Mesa County’s tax payers upwards of $1.2 million in legal fees, and is still being paid $95,000 per year for doing nothing for the county.
“What would be the financially responsible thing to do and would show some honor for the constituents she claims to represent, is to resign and let us put those funds to good use.” Says Commissioner Davis. No government entity can force her out though. They can only request she submit her resignation.
Peters’ term is set to end January 10, when a new elected official will step in and take her place as Mesa County’s Clerk. That isn’t enough time for an official recall petition, so the only option for Commissioners and party representatives is to continue to ask for a resignation.
