GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. — The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Management announced on Thursday a cyber-attack affecting approximately 46,000 veterans.
The Financial Services Center discovered one of its online applications was accessed by unauthorized users diverting payments to community health care providers for the medical treatment of vets.
The hackers gained access by using social engineering techniques and exploiting authentication protocols. FSC is alerting affected veterans including the next of kin of those deceased, about the risk to their personal information.
FSC is offering credit monitoring services for free for those whose social security numbers may have been compromised.
