GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - Many veterans are prescribed opioids for pain management. Those with the Grand Junction VA Center hope that a new program will help bring down those numbers.
The National Institute on Drug Abuse said roughly 21-29% of patients prescribed opioids for chronic pain misuse them, and between 8-12 of those patients will develop an opioid use disorder.
That's why the Grand Junction VA Center is offering a new Whole Health for Life Approach, which offers alternative pain management.
Some of the services available include physical therapy, tai chi and acupuncture.
KREX 5 spoke with a local veteran who took opioids for 16 years before coming off of them. He said it wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for this program.
"I'm actually out camping, hiking, my wife loves it. It's just like a normal life, minus any opioids," said Kenny Sewell, Army Veteran.
