GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – (KREX) To raise awareness on suicide prevention in the Grand Valley, the Veterans Association and Colorado Mesa University Student Veterans Association worked together this awareness month and planned an event that addresses an important issue, while hosting in an open environment.
“While talking about a very serious topic like suicide, when we raise awareness, and we have the conversation, that’s how we can begin to prevent suicide,” Rainy Reaman, President of CMU Student Veterans said.

Suicide can affect us all, but this event focuses on a particular group that is most affected.
“There’s 20 to 22 veterans that commit suicide everyday, who die by suicide everyday. That’s what this is really going to help, to bring awareness to,” Sophia Hayner, CMU Student Veterans President said.

This volleyball tournament fundraiser is not just for getting residents into the community, but also supports local veterans.
“Being active duty for Air Force for 13 years, I lost friends and coworkers and lives have forever been changed because of that,” Hayner explains, “Today really just hits home and this is our first year doing it and I think for our first year we had a really good turnout.”
