GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — On January 3 around 5:30 in the afternoon, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office was called to help find a 51-year-old woman and her two dogs after the got lost while snowshoeing on the Grand Mesa. The woman and her companions are safe after being located in the Lands End area.
The Mesa County Search and Rescue snow skippers team was able to locate her and her dogs thanks to the GPS device she was carrying. Crews spent more than five hours in the cold weather to complete the rescue mission.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office reminds the public to be prepared for extreme weather even if you are only planning a short trip as conditions can rapidly change. Also carry with you extra food, water, and warm clothing as well as a GPS device that can send an emergency signal even when there is no cell service. Having a plan and letting someone know about your plans helps search crews find you faster if you need help.
