Man facing murder and arson charges in woman’s death


GRAND JUNCTION, Colo — The Grand Junction Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a structure fire on the 500 block off 29 1/2 Road Wednesday afternoon.

After the fire was extinguished and it was safe to go inside, emergency crews entered the home and found a body.

Approximately ten minutes after the incident was first reported, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office received an additional tip.

Megan Terlecky with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, says, “the Grand Junction Regional Communication Center received a 911 call about information that a person may have been involved in that incident.”

Deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were able to locate a suspect near the 3100 block of Covey Avenue, about five minutes away from the scene of the fire.

Terlecky also says, “there’s one suspect, that suspect is in custody and is currently facing charges”

The suspect, 33-year-old Kellan Hoyt, was arrested Wednesday night.

Hoyt is facing first-degree murder, first-degree arson, tampering with a deceased body, and second-degree assault.

He is currently being held in the Mesa County Detention Center on a two million dollar cash bond.

While the case is still under investigation, the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help.

Terlecky added, “the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public that if they happened to have information about this case to give us a call, you can call us at our witness tip line.”
