Opioids In Mesa County

A Brief Look At Opioid Use In County

On Monday Mesa County Commissioners gave the County Attorney, Patrick Coleman, the “go-ahead” to join 15 other Colorado entities that are suing 21 pharmaceutical companies for over-prescribing and over-marketing opioid drugs in the state.

The lawsuit (Civil Action 19-cv-00114) is a way for local governments to recoup money that has been lost due to opioid overuse. When speaking to KREX, County Attorney Patrick Coleman, cited money that was spent due to jail overcrowding, the impact on the court system, the parks department, public health departments, and human services.

At Mesa County Public Health efforts are underway to help curb the problem. Including beefing up medication assisted treatment. Also, they bring together a number of groups from the medical community, behavioral health, community based resources, and D-51 to find a collaborative solution. They explore everything from education and prevention, to treatment and recovery.
