Mesa County tops the list of Colorado counties when it comes to the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. $3.6 million will end up in the Mesa County general funding for 2019. This comes after a bi-partisan bill to reauthorize PILT for 10 years is introduced by Colorado U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D) and Cory Gardner (R) with the help of other Western Senators.
This is an important topic for the Western United States, because many like Mesa County, are made up of vast amounts of public land. The Department of the Interior collects more than $11.9 billion in revenue annually from commercial activity.
