GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – Community group Right & Wrong, otherwise known as RAW, hosted the area’s first annual Juneteenth Education & Celebration event at Lincoln Park in Grand Junction.

Mesa County Commissioners proclaimed June 19th, 2020 a day to celebrate Juneteenth.

Friday’s event featured music, food, educational tents, a proclamation and guest speakers.

Juneteenth is the celebration of the emancipation of slaves. On June 19th, 1865 in Galveston, Texas the Union Army announced federal orders that all slaves were free.

This, almost two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
