GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – A school supply donation drive launched early this week and aims to provide all students with the school supplies they need.
The annual Stuff the Bus event is happening now through the end of July.
According to School District 51, as of right now it still plans to reopen schools on August 10th and students will need supplies.
High demand items like #2 pencils, colored pencils, markers, crayons and notebooks could make a difference for many students.
According to the district, 44% of D51 students live in households that qualify for free or reduced meals.
“There’s always a need for school supplies, you know, a lot of our students struggle to even pay for school lunches or something like that and so whatever help we can give them is huge and we all remember that first day of school where you have the new shoes or the new backpack and everything, this is just our way to make sure that those kids get a good start to their school year,” said Catherine Foster, a communications specialist at D51.
The bus will be parked at the center of Mesa Mall through July 31st. Shoppers are encouraged to pick up extra supplies while shopping and donations in the bus through one of the open windows.
