It was a good night for Colorado Mesa basketball. Both the women’s and the men’s team came away with a win in the first round of the RMAC tournament.
The Ladies are the No. 1 seed and played like it, downing the Roadrunners 60-46 at home. Junior Kylyn Rigsby had a game-high 26 points, adding four assists, and three steals. Junior Dani Turner was named first team All-RMAC before the game and didn’t disappoint on Tuesday. She scored 20 points and had 7 rebounds.
Grand Junction native, senior Syndi Brandon had 11 rebounds, five assists, and three steals and was named the RMAC Defensive player of the year, along with first team All-RMAC accolades. Junior Kelsey Siemons was named to the All-RMAC second team.
The women will host the second round Friday March 6 against No. 4 Colorado Mines. Time is TBA.
The men took down a scrappy UCCS team 69-66 to advance to the second round of the tournament for the first time since 2016. It was the second time this season the men beat the Mountain Lions by three.
Four Mavs scored in the double digits tonight, led by junior transfer Ethan Richardson who put up 18. Only five Mavs scored though. Senior Michael Skinner nearly had a double-double with 16 points and nine rebounds adding three assists, three steals, and a block. He was named an All-RMAC honorable mention.
Senior Tommy Nuno was named to the first team and filled up the stat sheet Tuesday. He had 12 points, seven rebounds, six steals, and three assists. Junior Jared Small was also named an All-RMAC honorable mention, he put up 14 points, four steals, and three rebounds.
Some interesting stats from the game. CMU was a perfect 17-17 from the free throw line, but they only made two three pointers. Throughout the season the men have been known as one of the most efficient three-point shooting teams in the country, but they went 2-9 from range.
The men will play in the second round of the conference tournament Friday March 6 against No. 1 Black Hills State. Time TBD.
