As sure at Sydni Brandon's half court shot, the Colorado Mesa women's basketball team knew this year was going to be special.
And with a shot 70+ feet to end the third quarter in the RMAC Tournament Championship, the raucous Brownson Arena crowd witnessed that magic firsthand.
A Mavs second half spurt and some pinpoint shooting led the ladies to their first RMAC Tournament title since 2014 Saturday, topping the Westminster Griffins 67-50. In front of a nearly sold out Brownson crowd, the Mavericks cut down the netting.
Senior Jaylyn Duran finished the night shooting 11-15 from the floor, with 27 points. Sydni Brandon, typically the facilitator on the offense, added 13 of her own and 4 assists. Brandon was named RMAC Tournament MVP.
The 22nd-ranked Mavs will now await their seeding in the NCAA Women's Division II National Tournament. The selection show will release the bracket Sunday evening.
