Dagan Rienks is a local product from Paonia who was gifted with great athletic ability and a great support system.
Rienks played basketball and football at Paonia high school and was first team All-State in both sports his senior year. He was dead set on playing basketball in college until CMU head football coach Russ Martin changed his mind.
Now he’s a red-shirt tight end for the Mavericks and is having a good year, trying to make his position a prime offensive target for scoring points.
In the middle of the season, Dagan found out his father, who is the head basketball coach for the Paonia high school girl’s basketball team, has stage four colon cancer.
The news shook Dagan and his family. KREX sports director Troy Lynch caught up with Rienks to check in on his dad, talk about his decision to play football over basketball, the season, his hair transformation, and much more.
