The Colorado Mesa baseball team, anchored by a strong pitching performance, advanced Friday in the losers bracket of the NCAA Regional Tournament with a 3-2 extra-innings win against Tarleton State.

Ace Kyle Leahy pitched seven innings for the Mavericks, allowing only two runs on seven hits. Mesa tied the game in the 8th inning with a Garrett Ball single to left field, scoring JJ Carr. Freshman Frankie Fitzgerald shut down the Texans in four scoreless innings, striking out four and earning the win for the Mavs in the 11th.

In the top of the stanza, Zach McLeod ripped a ground ball that went through the legs of Tarleton State’s first baseman. Garrett Ball would score from second, putting the Mavs on top for good.

Mesa avoids elimination with the win, and moves to 41-15 on the season. The Mavericks will face St. Edward’s in the next round of the losers bracket. Colorado Mesa played the Hilltoppers last season in the NCAA Regionals, winning 11-2 en route to the College World Series. The rematch will take place at Wilder Park at 2:00 p.m. from the campus of West Texas A&M.
