GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — Three of the last six RMAC Volleyball regular season champs finished conference play undefeated. Last season CMU Volleyball went a cool 15-3 in the RMAC, which was only good enough to tie Regis for third. Coach Dave Fleming, entering his 17th year at the helm, says his team’s aspirations are higher. “Our goals are to compete for championships. I really think this is a special group, obviously you’ve got to have a little luck on your side as well. But, I think with everything that’s going on on this campus every team should be competing for championships.”

Championships are something Mesa’s volleyball players are familiar with. Eight Mavs on the roster earned the title of national champion; helping the Beach Volleyball Team capture the Division II National Championship at the AVCA Small College Championships this past April. One of those players, Tye Wedhorn agrees with coach: the feat serves as a shift in belief. “Deep down I feel like it brought some people up. You know you can do this! We literally played the top people in the country and came out on top. It doesn’t seem as daunting because we’ve done it.”

When it comes to the court game, CMU will be testing their mettle early this year. On the first day of the season the Mavs are taking on the team that bounced them from last year’s NCAA Regional Tournament, UT Tyler. Then, a week later, they will face the reigning National Champs and perennial powerhouse Tampa. Not to mention- RMAC play starts in less than a month (Sep. 8) against the RMAC champions MSU-Denver. A calendar that makes Saturday’s scrimmage games all that more important. “We’re going to throw them in uniforms, it’s the first time they get to do that this year.” Coach Flemming said, “First time the crowd’s going to be in the bleachers. So yeah, absolutely it’s important. We don’t really have a starting lineup yet, and I think that’s going to be kind of the first step in figuring out who’s going to be in that starting lineup.”

Brownson will host three games on Saturday August, 13th. The Mavs face Utah State University Eastern at 10am and familiar foes Western Colorado University at 2pm.
