The 2019 Grand Junction Rockies roster was unveiled Wednesday at Suplizio Field during the Rockies annual Media Day.
Season-ticket holders streamed into the concourse, meeting new additions and old faces to last year’s team. Familiar players like infielders Reese Berberet and Christopher Navarro are returning to Grand Junction for a second consecutive season. Navarro started 40 games for the Rox in 2018, primarily at shortstop.
As a team, the Rockies finished 43-33 in 2018, and won the Pioneer League South Division. First-year manager Jake Opitz led the team to their first ever Pioneer League Championship appearance, falling to the Great Falls Voyagers in consecutive games.
A slew of new talent will fill in the gaps on the 2019 roster. Mitchell Kilkenny, a 2018 second-round pick out of Texas A&M, will pitch for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery. Gavin Hollowell (6th round in 2019, St. Johns) and Jared Horn (7th round in 2019, California Berkely) are two promising pitchers in Grand Junction this season.
The Rockies open their season against the Ogden Raptors on the road beginning Friday, June 14th.
