On Friday night at Brownson Arena, both Colorado Mesa basketball teams earned victories in their first games of the Thanksgiving Classic.
The women's team started things off with a 56-43 win over St. Edward's in their home opener. The game was tied at 25 at the half, but the Mavericks outscored the Hilltoppers 23-3 in the third quarter to pull away for the victory.
Erin Reichle led the team with 21 points and tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Sydni Brandon also had seven rebounds.
With the win, CMU keeps their undefeated start to the season alive. The Mavericks will try for a 6-0 record when they face Northern New Mexico College at 5:00 p.m. Saturday.
The men followed up the women's win with a 95-65 defeat of MidAmerica Nazarene. The Mavs had a 23-point halftime lead and did not let up. CMU made 13 three-point attempts, shooting 52% from beyond the arch.
Damon Dubots only made one of those threes, but led the Mavericks with 21 points. Connor Nichols led CMU with 10 rebounds and also added 15 points.
The Mavericks have now won three games in a row. Their chance at four in a row is Saturday at 7:00 p.m. against Central Methodist.
