Ten valley-area high school athletes signed letters of intent to continue their athletic careers on Wednesday.

“It feels good, I’m ready to have that title of college athlete,” said Fruita Monument senior Hannah Thornburg, who will play golf at Pacific University-Oregon.

Just like Thornburg, the other valley-area athletes signing on Wednesday can now embrace the title of college athlete.

“I’ve been putting work in since I was little, and the dream has finally paid off for me,” said Fruita Monument senior Taylor Laing, who signed to play softball at Midland College. “I would just say I’m super excited to start the next chapter of my life.”

As these athletes begin their next life chapters, they haven’t forgotten their motivation for this accomplishment.

“It’s so amazing to me. I’ve had people that have doubted me from the start and I’m so grateful that I pulled through and believed in myself and had a bunch of support the whole time,” said Grand Junction senior Taegan Lynn Stewart, who signed to play volleyball at Doane University.

“That’s definitely why I’m here is all the help I’ve had from several different pros in the valley and just the support of my teammates,” said Palisade senior Alyson Shuman, who has committed to play golf at Lewis University.

Playing a sport in college can present many challenges, but these athletes will be sure to remember that student comes first in student athlete.

“Honestly, pursuing law at Bethany and just being a part of a team honestly,” said Fruita Monument senior Kelli DeCrow who will play softball at Bethany College.

“I’m really excited to go play some baseball and continue my education,” said Fruita Monument senior Cade Halvorson-Oxford who signed to play baseball at Northeast Nebraska Community College.

A day like this is one these athletes will always remember as they achieve their lifelong dream.

“If I would have told myself I was standing here, I probably would not have believed it,” said Fruita Monument senior Gavin Brown, who committed to play baseball at Hastings College. “It’s always been a dream, so it’s a dream come true right now so it’s pretty nice.”
