Still Streaking: Surface’s No Hitter Propels Maverick Softball to 12 Straight

Local Sports

MacKenzie Surface was unfazed by the string of zeroes lining the centerfield scoreboard. Calmly, the Maverick pitcher walked onto the rubber, wound up, and fired her 122nd pitch of the day.

Her 14th strikeout victim waved helplessly with the bat as the softball smacked the mitt. Surface grinned as catcher Zoe Pakes and teammates rushed to congratulate her, thrilled to be a part of CMU softball history.

Surface threw the first no-hitter for third-ranked Colorado Mesa since 2010, as the Mavericks shut down Chadron State 6-0 Sunday in the team’s 2018 home opener.

The Mavericks won both games against the Eagles during the day’s doubleheader, shutting down Chadron State 11-1 in six innings during game two.

Colorado Mesa (12-0) scored their opening run of the day on a Brooke Hodgson RBI double. They padded their lead in the 5th when Kellie Mrofcza shot a fastball into the gap, scoring two Mavericks for the 6-0 lead. Surface would do the rest on the mound, pitching all seven innings, striking out 14 and walking four in the win.

The Mavs kept their hot bats going in game two, scoring two runs in the 1st inning on the way to a 11-1, six-inning mercy.  Maggie Manwarren stole home on a wild pitch in the 1st, and Lexie Comer knocked in Hodgson later with a two-out RBI single. Kimbri Herring pitch all six innings, giving up just three hits and one earned run to the Eagles.

The four-game series against Chadron State continues Monday, when the teams meet for another doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
