On an abornally warm February day at Suplizio Field, The #12 CMU Mavericks baseball team won their home opener Friday, toppling the MSU-Billings Yellowjackets 5-4.
Both starting pitchers gave strong performances on the mound Friday. The Mavs JR McDermott went six innings, allowing just one run on three hits and struck out three. Jarrod Molnaa for the Mustangs threw nine strikeouts in five innings, surrendering just one run on one hit.
The Mavs got on the board thanks to a Josh Shapiro bases-loaded walk in the second inning, scoring Dominic Demarco. CMU failed to score again in the inning, carrying the 1-0 lead into the fifth inning.
The Yellowjackets tallied two runs in the seventh inning, off a Matt Dillon solo home run and an Andrew Schleusner sacrifice fly. MSU-Billings led 3-2 until the Mavs scored three runs in the bottom half of the frame. Tyler Sandovol singled to left field, scoring Demarco and Johnny Carr.
The Mavs move to 4-1 on the season. They will continue their series with MSU-Billings beginning Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at noon from Suplizio.
