In a battle of top 10 teams, The #5 Colorado Mesa baseball team soared past #9 Colorado School of Mines 7-1 Friday night at Suplizio Field.
The Mavs starter J.R. McDermott (4-0) pitched a stellar 8.0 innings, with 12 strikeouts in a shutout victory. McDermott allowed only six hits and one hit in his start, with Ryan Overboe coming in the 9th to close the game.
Mesa found the scoreboard in the 1st inning, with Caleb Farmer's two-run home run to left field. Catcher Spencer Bramwell singled in the third to bring Hunter Douglas home. CMU added two more runs with consecutive doubles in the 5th; Jordan Stubbings and Dominic DeMarco both found gaps in the outfield, pushing the lead to 5-0.
The Mavs move to 17-2 on the season, and 5-0 in the RMAC with the win. Colorado Mines (13-3, 4-1 RMAC) returns to Suplizio Field for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
