The Walters State Senators utilized their high-powered offense again Wednesday, rallying for a 12-10 win over the Southern Idaho Golden Eagles in the fifth day of the 2018 Alpine Bank Junior College World Series.
The Senators notched their 60th win of the season, and completed their run through the losers bracket. They remain the only undefeated team in the JUCO World Series.
The game nearly got away from the Eagles in the 1st inning, when Walters State scored six runs off starting pitcher Trent Bixby. Southern Idaho slowly fought back, scoring five in the 2nd, courtesy of a Travis Bohall grand slam. The Golden Eagles would briefly take a 10-8 lead, before Walters pulled away with four runs in the 6th. Neither team would score again.
The Senators Duncan Pence led the charge for Walters State, smacking 5 RBIs, including a three-run home run in the 1st. Relief pitcher Alex Haynes picked up his first win of the JUCO World Series on the mound for Walters, striking out eight Eagle in four innings.
In Wednesday's day game, the San Jacinto Gators pummeled the Monroe Mustangs 11-1 in a six-inning mercy. The Gators send the World Series newcomers home with their second loss of the tournament.
San Jacinto will play Southern Idaho in the losers bracket Thursday at 3:00 p.m. The Senators and the Chipola Indians will play their second game of the competition later that night at 7:30 p.m.
