GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX)— The Colorado Mesa University women’s sevens rugby team are your D2 national champions!

The women’s sevens team rode an 18 and 2 record into the national championship game where they faced off against the San Jose State Spartans, who beat the Mavs just the day before.

After falling behind 14-7 with 30 seconds left, the Mavs marched down the pitch and scored with almost no time remaining. After tying it up CMU recovered the ball after the kick-off then marched downfield again with no time left on the clock to walk it off on the Spartans.

The Rugby team has reached the top of the mountain and now they’re looking to parley it into a Grand Mesa. But beyond that, they want to be a varsity team.

Hopefully we at some point have raised enough attention to have that legitimate talk and conversation and see what it will take to make this team a varsity program.
