GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — School’s out for the summer, so there’s no kids in the classroom, but there’s still work to be done. School District 51 is the largest employer in Mesa County, with close to 3,000 employees, and a few open positions. Carter Ness is the recruiting specialist, and he’s our June D51 Golden Apple winner.

Carter helps recruit for all licensed positions within the school district, from teachers to administrators to special service providers. A lot of his job is telling qualified candidates why D51 stands out as a great place to work, and he told us it’s “the atmosphere. Everyone here is in it for the right reason. We have the best students, and everyone has a passion for education, and they’re our future leaders. They want to see Mesa County Flourish.”

Carter enjoys his work, because it’s rewarding, and he knows he’s making a difference. He said “I love it here, it’s the best place I could ever imagine working, and as soon as you’re able to fill any position you know you’re making an impact for student’s lives and our community.”

Carter’s helped recruit over 150 employees for the next school year, but there are still open positions. If you’re interesting in finding out more, go to and click on employment. Thank you Carter for your hard work for school district 51, and congratulations on winning a Golden Apple Award.
