Avalanche Danger and Road Closures in Western Colorado


The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed US Highway 550 also known as Red Mountain Pass.

The pass, which cuts through the San Juan Mountains will remain closed until further notice. Closure points span from mile marker 91 in Ouray through mile marker 71 in Silverton.

The National Weather Service in Grand Junction reports, 8 inches of snow has fallen in Silverton since Friday morning but as much as 18 inches could fall in the area over the next couple of days.

The Grand Mesa and San Juan Mountains currently have the highest avalanche danger in the state.

Avalanche danger on the Western Slope mountain ranges is categorized as considerable, which is a 3 out of 5 rating.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, dangerous avalanche conditions exist especially near treeline elevations, and these conditions are expected to continue through the weekend.
