GRAND JUNCTION– The search for a wanted suspect ends in a sad and unexpected fashion Tuesday afternoon.

Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department were in the wooded area behind Glacier Ice Arena, attempting to contact an adult male who has several warrants out for his arrest.

Officials say during the search, a dog ran toward the officers, barking and displaying aggressive behavior, and eventually charged at one of the officers.

An officer fired one shot, striking and killing the animal.

The police department is now working with animal control in an effort to identify the dog, which was not wearing any tags, and locate its owner.

The dog is described as a black and white adult male pit bull or pit bull mix, and anyone who believes this could be their dog is asked to contact Mesa County Animal Control.
